Even though my doctor had cleared me to travel again, I was very apprehensive about many things: the cabin pressure, the length of the plane ride, and wondering if any of my impairments (my right side was affected by the stroke, which affected my leg and dominant right-hand, among other things) would hinder my desire to enjoy the trip. Well, I'm glad that all my anxieties were debunked.

After a whirlwind of everyday routines, school drop-offs, work deadlines, and life’s usual pace, my family and I decided to pause and soak in something completely different. We packed our bags, boarded a plane, and landed in the vibrant, sun-drenched paradise of Cancún, Mexico—a destination that gave us more than we ever expected.
We stayed at a family-friendly, all-inclusive resort nestled along a coastline that felt like it went on forever. The kind of place where every palm tree sways just right, the food is always within arm’s reach, and the hardest decision of the day is whether to swim in the ocean or float in the pool. It was perfect. And for one glorious week, we made memories that we’ll be reliving for years.
Resort Living: Where Fun Meets Rest
The atmosphere pulled us in from arrival—warm, laid-back, and buzzing with happy energy. Our resort was beautifully designed for families, with something for everyone. My twin boys were in heaven. Between the kids’ club, sprawling pools, and a colourful water park with twisting slides and splash zones, they were constantly on the move—and continually smiling.
Meanwhile, my husband and I found our happy place, too. With the boys thoroughly entertained, we snuck in cocktails by the pool, afternoon naps in shaded cabanas, and long, delicious dinners without interruptions. There’s something magical about not having to cook, clean, or plan—just waking up and letting the day unfold. The drinks flowed, the staff was wonderful, and we found the perfect balance between family time and couple time.

Beaches That Go On Forever
Of course, no trip to Cancún is complete without soaking up the sea—and we did just that. The beach was breathtaking, with powdery white sand and warm, crystal-clear waves. We spent hours playing by the shoreline, building sandcastles, jumping over waves, and watching the boys chase after tiny crabs.
My husband even tried his hand at deep-sea fishing one morning while I stayed back to relax with a beachside massage (10/10 recommend). He returned sun-kissed and grinning, holding stories of the open ocean, big catches, and cold beers. It was the kind of simple joy that makes you feel alive.

Waterslides, Pools, and Non-Stop Play
Back at the resort, the water park was a highlight for all of us. The boys raced each other down slides, squealed under giant tipping buckets, and made fast friends with other kids. Watching them zoom around with such freedom reminded me how important it is to step outside our everyday lives and play.
We often joined them in the pool, playing catch, floating under the sun, and having splash fights that made us laugh so hard our stomachs hurt. The resort hosted a family pool party with music and games one afternoon. It was one of those afternoons that felt timeless, where you forgot everything and enjoyed being together.

The 12-Hour Day Trip: Chichén Itzá and Cenote Magic
Midway through the week, we signed up for a full-day excursion that was a true highlight: a 12-hour adventure to the ancient ruins of Chichén Itzá and the sacred cenotes nearby.
It was a long day, yes, but absolutely worth every second. Our knowledgeable guide shared a rich history on the drive through the Yucatán Peninsula, which was scenic and full of rich history. We were in awe when we finally stood before the towering pyramid of El Castillo at Chichén Itzá. There was something surreal about standing where ancient Mayans once lived, prayed, and studied the stars.
Surprisingly, our boys were completely engaged. They loved learning about the echo effect when clapping at the pyramid's base and imagining the ball games played in the Great Ball Court. It made history come alive in a way that no textbook ever could.
After the ruins, we headed to a nearby cenote—and it was like stepping into a hidden world. The cool, clear water, the lush greenery, and the way sunlight streamed down through the opening above created a scene that felt like a fairytale. Swimming in that cenote was refreshing and almost spiritual, a moment I’ll always remember.
Evenings Full of Colour and Connection
Back at the resort, our evenings were just as full as our days, though in a different way. We enjoyed buffet dinners with enough variety to satisfy every picky eater and dessert lover in the group (looking at you, twin boys). Live music played in the background, and the scent of grilled seafood and tropical flowers lingered.
Some nights featured entertainment shows—fire dancers, mariachi bands, and local performers who brought so much life and culture to the stage. The boys danced under the stars, their little feet covered in sand, and we clinked glasses to a day well lived.
On quieter evenings, we’d sit by the beach as the sky turned every shade of orange and pink, watching the waves roll in while the kids hunted for seashells nearby. Those were the golden moments—simple, slow, and significant.

What I Brought Home (Besides a Suitcase Full of Sand and Seashells)
This trip wasn’t just a vacation but a reset, a reminder of what matters. I saw my boys thrive in new surroundings, challenge themselves, and make new friends. I saw my husband light up with that carefree energy that sometimes gets buried under adult responsibilities. And I felt myself soften, breathe, and fully be—present in a way I don’t always allow myself to be.
Cancún gave us more than sunshine and activities. It gave us togetherness. It reminded us how important it is to pause, unplug, and explore—both the world around us and the relationships we hold closest. We left with sun-kissed skin, tired feet, and full hearts.
Would we go back? In a heartbeat. The warmth, the sun, the beaches Cancún— beatuiful!
Thank you for the laughter, the memories, and the magic. Until next time...
